figure and ground is a listening environment for loudspeakers and headphones, designed to energise and activate the listening space. All sounds are taken from a digital sound archive of field recordings which documents key sonic features of the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland. Still at an early stage, the archive consists of environmental field recordings, the spoken word, story, song and instrument, human sonic intervention in the wider environment. There are regular new additions to the first and last of these categories.
